A history of PC gaming

The personal computer is the only major game platform that nobody controls. There is no approval process, no licensing seal and no fixed specification, which has made it the most technically ambitious, the most awkward and by a wide margin the most durable place to play.

Hobbyist machines and the class of 1977

Before there were personal computers there were institutional ones, and the games written on them were passed around freely because nobody had yet thought to sell them. Spacewar! spread through university installations in the 1960s as a demonstration program that came with the machine. Colossal Cave Adventure, written by Will Crowther from his own survey of a Kentucky cave system and expanded by Don Woods, travelled over the research network in 1977 and created interactive fiction more or less by accident. That culture of copying and improving somebody else's program went straight into the consumer era.

Three machines reached buyers in 1977 and made the market: the Apple II, the Commodore PET and the Tandy TRS-80, all sold as complete working products rather than kits. Software distribution was informal in a way that is now hard to imagine. Magazines printed program listings that readers typed in by hand, user groups swapped cassettes, and small publishers operated out of houses. Two role-playing series, Ultima and Wizardry, both reached Apple II owners in 1981 and translated tabletop adventuring into a computer form that Japanese developers later studied closely. Both rewarded mapping dungeons on graph paper, a habit that says a good deal about how much patience the audience had.

Which machines mattered varied sharply by country. The Commodore 64, shipping from 1982 with capable graphics and sound hardware at an aggressive price through ordinary retail chains, became one of the best-selling computer models ever made. Sinclair's ZX Spectrum, released in the United Kingdom in April 1982 with a rubber keyboard and cassette storage, created a British bedroom coding culture in which teenagers wrote games and mailed them to tiny publishers. A number of studios still working today trace their founders directly to that period and those machines. Continental Europe developed its own variations, and the resulting difference in taste between American and European computer games lasted for years.

How an accidental standard took over

IBM announced its Personal Computer in August 1981, assembled largely from components other companies made and documented in published specifications. Corporate credibility put computers into offices and then into homes. The openness had a consequence IBM did not intend: other manufacturers could build compatible machines, and they did, competing on price until the architecture effectively belonged to nobody in particular. For games this was initially a disadvantage, since business machines had poor graphics and sound next to a Commodore 64 or an Amiga, but it eventually produced something no closed platform could match.

What it produced was an upgrade cycle. Because the machine was a collection of interchangeable parts, an owner could improve it in stages instead of replacing it, and manufacturers could sell improvements to people who already had computers. Sound cards became common in the late 1980s. In 1996 the 3dfx Voodoo chipset brought hardware 3D acceleration to consumer machines through an interface developers actually adopted, and an accelerated computer was visibly better than any console of the day. Nvidia's GeForce 256 in 1999 was marketed as a graphics processing unit, and the phrase stuck permanently.

Software standardization took much longer. For years computer games ran on MS-DOS and addressed hardware more or less directly, which is why boxes listed supported sound cards by name and why installing a game could take an afternoon. Microsoft's DirectX, first released in 1995, gave Windows games a common route to graphics, sound and input hardware and ended the dependence on DOS. From that point the personal computer was a coherent commercial target rather than a collection of incompatible configurations that developers had to support one at a time. That consolidation cost the platform some of its eccentricity and gained it a great many more games.

Genres the open platform made possible

A keyboard, a mouse, a large screen and no session limit produced games that would not have existed anywhere else. Infocom's parser-driven interactive fiction, beginning with Zork I in 1980, ran on many incompatible machines through a portable interpreter and set a literary standard for the form. Elite, released in the United Kingdom in 1984, generated thousands of star systems procedurally out of very little memory and had no win condition at all. Civilization in 1991 built a strategy genre around long sessions and layered systems. The Sims in 2000 removed the goal entirely and reached an audience far outside the existing one.

The first-person shooter is the clearest case of all. id Software released Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 as shareware, giving away a first episode and selling the rest by mail, then Doom in 1993 with networked deathmatch and data files that players could edit themselves. Modding culture grew directly out of that openness. Valve released tools alongside Half-Life in 1998, and one of the resulting modifications, made by players, became Counter-Strike and one of the most played games in the world. None of this needed anyone's approval, which is exactly why it happened here.

Openness cut both ways. Copying was trivial and unauthorized distribution was endemic, which drove decades of increasingly intrusive protection schemes that often punished paying customers. Compatibility was the developer's problem rather than a platform holder's, so support burdens were high, and a game could run perfectly on one machine and not at all on another that looked identical. Publishers repeatedly declared the computer game market to be dying through the 1990s and 2000s, largely because boxed retail sales were falling. What was actually happening was a change in how games were sold.

Digital distribution and the storefront era

Valve launched Steam in 2003, initially as a way to patch its own multiplayer games and fight cheating. When Half-Life 2 shipped in 2004 requiring Steam activation even for boxed copies, the requirement was widely resented, and it also put the client on millions of machines. Within a decade the ordinary way to buy a computer game was to download it, and a developer with no publisher could reach a global audience directly. Shareware's descendant, in other words, became the mainstream. Competing stores followed, and the commission each takes became a live commercial argument.

The effect on who makes games was profound. Small teams could publish without shelf space, which turned independent development from a hobby into a viable career. Paid early access, which Minecraft demonstrated from 2009 by selling an unfinished game and improving it in public, became an accepted way to fund development. Crowdfunding added another route from 2012 onward. Some of these arrangements produced remarkable work, including a role-playing game that spent years in early access before becoming a mass-market critical success in 2023. Others illustrated the risk of taking money before the design exists.

Where PC gaming stands now

The personal computer is currently in an unusually strong position. It is the default platform for competitive online play, for strategy and simulation, for modding, and for most independent releases. Games from console makers that once stayed exclusive now routinely appear on it, sometimes at launch. The hardware conversation has shifted from raw rendering power toward upscaling and frame generation techniques that reconstruct images rather than draw every pixel, partly because manufacturing improvements have slowed and partly because graphics card prices have been volatile for years. The result is a platform defined less by any one machine than by the range of machines a game is expected to run on.

The platform's oldest virtue is also its clearest present advantage. Backward compatibility is imperfect but real, so a substantial part of the medium's history remains playable on current machines, often through community patches and compatibility layers rather than official support. Valve's own portable, running a Linux-based system with a translation layer for Windows software, extended that library into a handheld and prompted a wave of competitors. The open architecture that made the computer awkward for forty years is now the main reason its catalog has survived better than anybody else's.
