What a cookie is
A cookie is a small piece of text that a website asks your browser to keep and to hand back the next time you visit. Cookies are what let a shop remember a basket or a service keep you signed in. They are also what allowed advertising networks to recognize the same browser across many unrelated sites, which is the use that made them controversial in the first place.
What local storage is
Browsers also offer a simple place for a site to keep a short note on your own device. Unlike a cookie, that note is not attached to page requests and is not sent back automatically, so it cannot be used to follow you from site to site. It is useful for remembering a setting you chose, and that is the only thing this site uses it for.

That preference exists for accessibility rather than for the site's benefit. Movement on a page can be uncomfortable or disorienting for some readers, and browsers already offer a system-wide setting for reduced motion, which this site respects automatically. The stored preference simply lets you make a different choice here without changing your whole system.
What this site does not store

Why so little is stored
A reference work does not need to know who is reading it. Leaving out advertising and measurement removes any business reason to collect information, and the simplest way to protect a reader is never to hold the information at all. It also means this page can be short and specific instead of listing dozens of partner companies whose practices the archive could not vouch for anyway.
Clearing or blocking what is stored
Every current browser lets you view and delete stored site data, usually under a privacy or site settings menu, and lets you block storage either for one site or for all of them. Private and incognito windows discard everything when the window closes. If you clear or block storage for this site, the only consequence is that your motion preference resets to the default and you can set it again. No content is lost and nothing else stops working.
Requests not to be tracked
Some browsers can send a signal asking sites not to track the person using them. This site does not track readers whether or not such a signal arrives, so there is nothing for the signal to switch off. The same is true of the various opt-out tools offered by advertising networks: none of those networks is present here.
