Microsoft gives Windows games direct access to the hardware

Microsoft released the first version of DirectX, letting Windows programs reach graphics, sound and input hardware almost directly. It ended the game industry's dependence on MS-DOS and made Windows a coherent target for commercial development.

What happened

Windows had been a poor place for games. The operating system stood between a program and the hardware, which was fine for a spreadsheet and useless for anything redrawing a screen sixty times a second, so serious games shipped for MS-DOS and asked buyers to configure sound cards by hand. A small internal group argued that Windows would fail as a consumer platform once all the games lived elsewhere, and pushed a set of interfaces that let programs speak almost directly to the hardware while the system stayed out of the way.

The approach was pragmatic rather than elegant. Drivers exposed whatever a card could do, the libraries filled in whatever it could not, and games queried the machine at startup instead of asking the user which card was installed. Adoption was not immediate, and the first version impressed few developers, but the direction was right and successive releases closed the gap. Within a few years the operating system had become the default platform for computer games and MS-DOS development effectively stopped.

Consequences reached well beyond games. A single interface that hardware makers wrote drivers for and developers programmed against handed the graphics card market a common target, which sharpened competition among accelerator vendors later in the decade. The engineers who pushed the project were not universally popular inside the company, and accounts of the period describe a small group promoting an unfashionable priority at a firm preoccupied with offices. The same interfaces underpin Microsoft's consoles, and the shader languages that grew out of them now serve scientific computing and machine learning. Very little of that was on anyone's mind in 1995.

The world at the time

MS-DOS was where computer games were sold, and installing one meant knowing your sound card, your interrupt settings and how much conventional memory you had free. Windows 95 had just launched behind an enormous consumer campaign, and Microsoft needed the platform to look credible for entertainment. Consumer three-dimensional accelerator cards were still about a year away.

Historical significance

A software layer decided which platform the computer game industry would live on. By giving Windows the low-level access games required, Microsoft consolidated a fragmented field around one operating system and one hardware interface, a position it has held for roughly three decades.

What it changed

Games migrated to Windows over the following few years and MS-DOS releases disappeared. Standardized interfaces gave graphics hardware makers a common target and helped turn the accelerator card into a mass consumer product. The same technology stack was later carried into Microsoft's console business, tying the company's game platforms together.
