A history of handheld gaming

Portable game hardware has always been designed backward from a constraint nobody enjoys discussing: how long the thing runs before the batteries die. Almost every famous decision in handheld history, including several that looked like mistakes at the time, comes out of that arithmetic.

Pocket electronics before pocket consoles

The handheld business started with single-game devices. Mattel Electronics released Auto Race in 1976, generally recognized as the first fully electronic handheld game, built around a calculator-style processor with a row of light-emitting diodes standing in for cars. It sold well, Football followed and sold better, and a market for portable electronic play existed before anyone had built a portable machine that could play more than one thing. These were sold in toy departments rather than electronics stores, which shaped expectations about price, durability and who the customer was for years afterward.

Two developments pointed at what was coming. Milton Bradley's Microvision, in 1979, was the first handheld to accept interchangeable cartridges, arriving roughly a decade before that idea took hold. Its small liquid-crystal display was fragile and the library was thin, so it did not last. Nintendo's Game and Watch line, launched in 1980 and designed by Gunpei Yokoi, went the other way entirely: one inexpensive liquid-crystal game per unit, in credit-card and clamshell formats, sold in the tens of millions worldwide. The revenue helped fund the company's move into home consoles, and the clamshell format, folded shut to protect the screen in a pocket, reappeared much later in the Nintendo DS.

Light-emitting diodes are bright and hungry. Early liquid-crystal panels are dim and frugal. That tradeoff, stated plainly, explains most of the first decade. Diode handhelds looked exciting on a shelf and emptied batteries in hours. Liquid-crystal handhelds looked dull under store lighting and ran for a long time on a pair of small cells. Manufacturers who wanted a device a child could carry to school and play on a bus chose the dull screen, and the market rewarded them for it more than once. The lesson was learned early, and then had to be learned again by nearly every manufacturer that came afterward.

The Game Boy wins by losing on paper

Nintendo released the Game Boy in April 1989 with a monochrome screen, no backlight, and a processor that was undistinguished even by the standards of the day. Yokoi's design philosophy, often summarized as finding new uses for mature and inexpensive technology, produced a machine that was cheap to manufacture, robust enough to survive a backpack, and able to run for a long stretch on ordinary batteries. Bundling Tetris in Western markets brought in adults who would never have bought a children's toy, and the system reached a much broader audience than its specification suggested.

Its rivals were better on paper and worse in practice. Atari's Lynx, also in 1989, offered a backlit color screen, hardware scaling and multiplayer over a cable, and consumed batteries fast enough that owning one meant buying them constantly. Sega's Game Gear, in 1990, was the most successful direct challenger of its generation and had exactly the same weakness. Both machines were larger and more expensive. Players consistently chose the handheld that worked for a whole car journey over the one that looked better under the lights of a shop window. Battery life, in other words, was never really a specification. On a portable machine it is most of the product.

Software then extended the platform far past its expected end. Pokemon Red and Green arrived in Japan in early 1996, late in the hardware's life, built around collecting creatures and trading them with a friend over a link cable. The design turned the machine's cheapest accessory, a wire between two units, into the main reason to own one. Combined with a media franchise, it made the handheld a mass-market product again, and the North American release in 1998 alongside the Game Boy Color repeated the effect on a still larger scale. Hardware written off as obsolete instead outlived the more capable systems that were supposed to have replaced it.

More power, and the tradeoff returns

The Game Boy Advance in 2001 put a 32-bit processor and a wide screen into the same pocket format, comfortably running the kind of games that had needed a home console a decade earlier, and it stayed backward compatible with the existing library. It also shipped without a lit screen, which was the last time a major handheld asked players to go and find a lamp. Later revisions added front and then back lighting, and the extra power draw was absorbed by improvements in batteries and display efficiency rather than by shortening the time between charges.

The middle of the decade brought a genuine contest. Sony's PlayStation Portable, which reached North America in March 2005, offered console-style graphics, a wide screen, proprietary optical discs and media playback, and gave the handheld market real competition for the first time in fifteen years. Nintendo's DS, released in late 2004, went sideways instead: two screens, one of them touch-sensitive, a microphone and local wireless play. Its unconventional software, including brain training and pet simulations, reached people who did not consider themselves players at all, and it became one of the best-selling systems ever made.

The pattern repeated with a twist. The more powerful and more conventional machine sold well and was outsold by the cheaper, stranger one with longer battery life and broader appeal. Nintendo's 3DS in 2011 attempted further differentiation with a glasses-free stereoscopic screen, launched weakly, took a steep price cut within months, and recovered on the strength of its software while a great many owners simply switched the 3D effect off. Novel display technology, it turned out, was not the reason anybody carried a handheld in the first place. Convenience was, and the systems that understood as much consistently outsold the ones that did not.

Phones take over the pocket

The dedicated handheld's core advantage was that it was the game machine you happened to have with you. Smartphones removed that advantage completely, because everybody had one already and for other reasons. Nokia's N-Gage in 2003 had tried the opposite approach, building a phone shaped like a game machine with cartridges and online play, and it failed on ergonomics and library rather than on the underlying idea. The iPhone in 2007 and the App Store in 2008 came at it from the other side, and within a few years an enormous audience was playing games on devices sold as telephones.

Dedicated handhelds did not vanish, but their justification narrowed to the things phones do badly: physical controls, longer and more structured games, and libraries that do not depend on a storefront's monetization norms. Nintendo's Switch in 2017 resolved the question by refusing it, merging the company's console and handheld lines into one machine that docks to a television and detaches into a portable. It sold enormously. It also ended the era in which a single company maintained two separate hardware lines, two software pipelines and two sets of development teams. Every game the company made after that could reach its entire audience at once.

Handheld computers and the battery problem again

Valve's Steam Deck, released in February 2022, took a different route: a portable running a Linux-based system with a compatibility layer that lets it play a large existing library of Windows games. It made libraries people already owned genuinely portable, and it started a wave of competing handheld gaming computers from several manufacturers. The oldest tradeoff returned in its purest form. A demanding game on one of these machines may run for well under two hours, and players routinely cap frame rates and lower settings for the specific purpose of buying more runtime.

This is the same negotiation the Game Boy won in 1989, conducted with far better components. Processors have become dramatically more efficient, displays draw much less power than they used to, and battery chemistry has improved steadily rather than dramatically. What has grown fastest is the appetite of the software. Nearly every gain in efficiency has been spent, at least in part, on higher resolutions, higher frame rates and more demanding rendering, which is why the practical runtime of a serious portable game machine has improved far less than the technology inside it has.

Portable play as it stands today

Handheld gaming is now three markets that overlap awkwardly. Phones carry by far the largest audience and almost none of the hardware conversation. Hybrid consoles occupy the middle, with Nintendo's Switch 2 arriving in June 2025 with a larger screen, more power, magnetic controllers and backward compatibility with most of the original library. Portable computers sit at the demanding end, expensive and heavy and short-lived on a charge, and they are among the fastest-growing parts of the category. There is no longer one device that defines what portable play means, and the word handheld now covers machines with almost nothing in common except that you hold them.

The unresolved question is preservation, and it is more acute here than anywhere else in the medium. Handhelds get dropped, soaked and left in hot cars, and their batteries and screens fail on a schedule. Cartridge saves depend on small batteries soldered in decades ago that are now going flat, taking saved games with them when they do. Storefronts for older portable systems have been closed, which removes purchased software from circulation entirely. Museums and volunteer projects are working on all of it, but the portable record is physically fragile in a way the rest of the medium is not.
