The Commodore Amiga and Atari ST both reached buyers in 1985 with 16-bit processors, dedicated graphics and sound hardware and windowed operating systems, and they became Europe's leading game machines for the rest of the decade.

What happened
Jay Miner's design for the Amiga distributed work across coprocessors that could move blocks of memory, generate audio and change display parameters partway down the screen without troubling the main processor. Four channels of sampled sound and dozens of colors at once put it ahead of anything at a comparable price, and it multitasked when most machines could not. Commodore never quite decided who to sell it to, marketing it variously as a business computer, a video production tool and a games machine.
The Atari ST, produced quickly by a team under the executive who had previously run Commodore, was simpler, cheaper and shipped sooner. It lacked the custom coprocessors but included professional music connections as standard, which made it a fixture of recording studios for years. Rivalry between the two camps became one of the loudest arguments in computing, conducted in magazine letters pages with a heat that had little to do with the modest differences most games actually revealed.
Europe took both machines far more seriously than North America did. British, German, French and Scandinavian studios built the game business of the late 1980s and early 1990s on them, and the competitive scene of programmers producing audiovisual showpieces grew into the demoscene, a subculture that still holds annual gatherings. Public domain libraries and magazine cover disks circulated amateur work cheaply, which lowered the cost of trying an idea. Many developers who later moved to consoles and Windows learned their craft coaxing effects out of this hardware.
The world at the time
The eight-bit machines that had created the home computer market were reaching their limits, and consoles were either absent or discredited across most of the West. Buyers were accustomed to a fragmented field of incompatible platforms and chose on price, local software supply and whatever their friends owned.
Historical significance
These machines put capabilities previously found in expensive workstations into ordinary homes: sampled audio, animation, video overlay and multitasking. For games they raised expectations of what a computer should look and sound like, and they trained a European generation of programmers, artists and musicians.
What it changed
Mismanagement at both companies ended the two lines within a decade, and the ground they held passed to the standardized PC. Their software culture outlived the hardware in the demoscene, in tracker music formats, and in a European studio system that produced strategy, racing and adventure series. Enthusiast hardware and reissued systems still appear regularly.
