Quake moves the shooter into real 3D and onto the internet
id Software released Quake as shareware on June 22, 1996. Its engine rendered genuinely three-dimensional spaces, and multiplayer over the internet shipped with the game rather than arriving later as an add-on.

What happened
Doom had faked its third dimension convincingly, but its levels could never put one room above another. Quake could. John Carmack's engine handled arbitrary geometry, true perspective and lighting calculated into the world in advance, and the price was a dark, grinding look the team leaned into rather than hid. Players noticed something else first. Movement felt different in a space where the floor sloped, the ceiling mattered and an opponent could be directly above you, and aiming with a mouse quietly stopped being optional.
Multiplayer over the internet was the larger break. Early play across dial-up connections was rough, and a revised networking layer released later that year predicted player movement locally instead of waiting for the server to answer, which made matches on ordinary modems genuinely playable. Around that grew the apparatus of organized online competition: persistent servers run by volunteers, ladders, clans with tags and recruitment drives, and files traded on hobbyist sites. Almost none of it was designed or paid for by the publisher.
The game also shipped its own scripting language and level format, and the modifications that followed ranged from small rule changes to complete redesigns. One team-based conversion grew popular enough to be commercialized years afterward. Several of the people who built those modifications were hired by studios or founded their own, which made unpaid modding a recognized route into the industry. The engine itself was licensed widely and eventually released as open source, and its descendants powered a long line of commercial games.
The world at the time
Home internet access in 1996 meant a modem and a metered phone line for most American households. Multiplayer computer games generally assumed a local network or a direct dial connection between two machines. Hardware capable of drawing textured polygons quickly was only just reaching consumers, so most players ran the game in software, with the main processor doing every calculation itself.
Historical significance
Three things that now define online shooters arrived together here: true three-dimensional geometry, mouse aiming as the assumed default, and internet play as a shipped feature rather than a local network trick. The volunteer infrastructure that formed around it became the template for how multiplayer scenes organize themselves.
What it changed
Later versions supporting hardware acceleration became a standard benchmark and helped sell the first generation of 3D cards. Competitive ladders built on it produced some of the earliest paid players in North America. The habit of shipping editing tools alongside a game, and of hiring the people who used them, carried directly into the studios that followed, including the one that turned a shooter modification into a permanent business.
