What happened

Portable computers built for games were not new, and none had worked well. This one succeeded largely because of unglamorous software engineering. A compatibility layer translates Windows graphics and system calls on the fly, and years of investment had made it good enough that most titles simply run, with a per-game verification label telling buyers what to expect. Controls were laid out for a device held in two hands rather than borrowed from a desktop, including trackpads for games that assume a mouse, and the whole system suspends and resumes like a console.

The effect on players was mainly one of continuity. Games already bought could be played on a train or in bed without repurchasing anything, and the device is an ordinary computer underneath, so users install other software, other storefronts and other operating systems as they please. Prices started notably low for the specifications, which suggested thin hardware margins offset by store revenue. Battery life on demanding games remained short, and the machine is heavy, but the proposition was clear enough to create a product category almost immediately.

The world at the time

A hybrid console had spent five years proving that people want to play substantial games away from a television. Mobile processors had become efficient enough to make it plausible, and digital storefronts meant most players already owned dozens or hundreds of games with nowhere portable to play them. Earlier attempts at handheld computers had been expensive and awkward.

Personal computer gaming became portable without a separate library, subscription or ecosystem. The compatibility work involved also made Linux a practical platform for playing Windows games, reducing a dependency that had shaped computer gaming for a quarter of a century.

What it changed

Competing handheld gaming computers arrived from several manufacturers within a year, most running Windows and generally at higher prices. Publishers began testing on the device as a matter of routine, and Linux compatibility improved across the industry as a side effect. A refreshed model with a better screen followed, and the category has become a permanent part of the market.
