MIT students draw mazes with a light pen for fun
Around MIT's TX-0, an early transistorized computer with a display and a light pen, small programs appeared for the pleasure of writing them, including one in which a hand-drawn maze was searched by a simulated mouse.

What happened
The TX-0 came to MIT from Lincoln Laboratory in the late 1950s and was unusual twice over. It used transistors rather than tubes, and students could sign up to sit at it and run their own programs directly instead of handing work to an operator. It also had a display and a light pen. Mouse in the Maze used both. A person drew walls on the screen with the pen, placed goals inside the layout, and then watched a dot representing a mouse work its way through, remembering where it had already been.
Other programs from the same circle drew patterns, played tic-tac-toe or coaxed music out of the machine's speaker. Attribution for the maze program is uncertain, with published accounts crediting staff engineers, students or some combination of the two, and the best-known version of the story has the cheese replaced by martini glasses so the mouse could be made to stagger. That detail may or may not be reliable. The documented part is the practice: people with unsupervised access to an interactive computer wrote things purely for amusement.
This is the culture that mattered. When a PDP-1 arrived at the same institute a couple of years later, the group around it already had habits, shared code, a demonstrated appetite for graphics and no belief that a computer's time was too valuable to spend on play. The most influential early computer game came out of that room, and the working style of tinkering with hardware you were not supposed to touch spread along with the people who learned it there.
The world at the time
Computing in 1959 mostly meant batch processing, where a job was submitted and results collected hours later. Machine time cost enough that playing with it needed a justification. A transistorized computer with a display, a pen and an open sign-up sheet was a rarity, and MIT's willingness to let students use one directly was as significant as the hardware itself.
Historical significance
The programs themselves were slight. What formed around them was not: a group of people who treated an interactive computer as a place to make things, expected a screen to respond to them, and passed both attitudes along. Accounts of early game development trace back to this environment rather than to any single program written in it.
What it changed
Spacewar! followed on the successor machine within three years and spread to computer installations across the country. Light pen work fed into research on graphical interaction at the institute, and the surrounding culture became the subject of later books that fixed the word hacker in public use. Playful programming turned into a recognized route by which serious software gets built.
