Interchangeable cartridges arrive on a programmable home console
Fairchild's console combined a microprocessor with games sold on plug-in cartridges, the architecture the whole industry adopted within a year. It sold modestly, and the engineer who led the work went unrecognized for decades.

What happened
A semiconductor company built it, which explains a great deal. Fairchild had a processor to promote and assembled a console around it, with games supplied on cartridges styled to resemble eight-track tapes. Jerry Lawson led the engineering effort, one of very few Black engineers in the industry at the time. The controllers were upright grips that twisted, pushed and pulled, giving analog control alongside a fire button, and the console carried a pause button so a player could stop the action, a genuine novelty.
Everything after that went less well. The cartridge library stayed small, the graphics were coarse even by the standards of the day, and Atari's better-funded system arrived within a year and forced a rename to avoid confusion. Fairchild left the business, selling the console on to another company that kept it alive briefly. The architecture, though, was the future: a general-purpose processor in the console and software on removable media, which is what every cartridge and disc system since has been.
The world at the time
The home market in late 1976 was drowning in single-purpose ball-and-paddle boxes selling at falling prices. Semiconductor firms were hunting for consumer applications to absorb their production. Programmable consoles existed only as engineering projects, and no retailer or customer had any experience of buying games separately from the machine that ran them.
Historical significance
The idea that a console is a computer waiting for software, rather than a box containing fixed games, was demonstrated here first. That single decision separated the dedicated ball-and-paddle era from everything after it, and it is why a console's value came to rest on its library instead of its hardware.
What it changed
Within a year Atari shipped a cartridge system with far greater resources behind it, and the format question of the previous three years was settled. Lawson's role in the work drew little attention until historians and industry groups began recognizing it late in his life and after his death, part of a broader effort to correct the record about who built the early industry.
