Breakout turns a two-player rally into a single-player test
Atari answered the question of what a lone player does with a ball-and-paddle game by standing the court upright and filling the top of it with bricks. The result was a hit, heavily copied, and it left marks on computing.

What happened
Bushnell and Steve Bristow specified the concept: one paddle, one ball, and a wall of colored rows to chip away at, with the ball speeding up as the player dug deeper. Steve Wozniak, then working at Hewlett-Packard, built a prototype in his spare time and stripped the chip count down to a degree that impressed everyone and made the design awkward to manufacture, so Atari's own engineers reworked it for production. Color came from strips of cellophane taped over a black-and-white monitor, a trick common at the time.
Operators found the machine earned steadily, and Japanese manufacturers produced their own block-breaking variants in quantity, one of which set a Taito engineer thinking about what else might fill the top of a screen. Wozniak carried the experience in the other direction. Video circuitry and paddle inputs he designed for the Apple II reflected what he had learned building the cabinet, and he wrote a version of the game in the machine's own language to demonstrate what it could do.
The world at the time
By 1976 the arcade was crowded with ball-and-paddle machines and their variations, and earnings per cabinet were falling as the novelty wore off. Operators wanted something recognizable but new. In parallel, hobbyist computing was a year away from its first finished consumer machines, and the engineers moving between the two fields were often the same people.
Historical significance
Single-player arcade design took a decisive step here. Rather than needing a second person, the machine set a challenge that escalated, which meant it could take money from one player all afternoon. That structure, a solitary contest against a rising difficulty curve, became the standard arcade shape for the rest of the decade.
What it changed
Block-breaking became a permanent genre, revived commercially in the 1980s and reimplemented endlessly since. Japanese clones of the design fed directly into the game that transformed the arcade business in 1978. The connection between one cabinet and the Apple II is also a useful reminder that early personal computers were shaped partly by people who had built coin-operated games.
