Sony's console paired a custom solid-state drive and hardware ray tracing with a controller offering detailed haptics and resistant triggers. Component shortages kept it genuinely hard to buy for well over a year.

What happened

The storage system was the design's organizing idea. A custom drive with dedicated compression hardware moved data fast enough that developers no longer had to hide loading behind corridors, elevators and slow doors, techniques that had shaped level design for decades. Ray tracing support brought physically accurate reflections and lighting to console games, and the machine's audio hardware handled positional sound as a first-class feature rather than an afterthought. The enclosure was conspicuously large, a consequence of cooling a power-hungry processor quietly enough for a living room.

The controller attracted more attention than any specification. Small actuators reproduced textures and impacts precisely enough to distinguish walking on gravel from walking on wood, and the triggers could apply resistance, so drawing a bow or squeezing a stiff brake felt different from pressing a button. A pack-in technical demonstration built entirely around those sensations made the case better than marketing could. Manufacturing was another story: a global semiconductor shortage, compounded by resellers using automated tools to buy stock, kept the console scarce and overpriced through 2021 and beyond.

The world at the time

The launch landed in the middle of a pandemic and a worldwide shortage of chips affecting cars, phones and appliances alike. Demand for home entertainment was unusually high, retail was largely online, and automated purchasing by resellers made scarce electronics almost impossible to buy at list price for ordinary customers.

Historical significance

Storage speed, rather than graphics performance, was treated as the generation's defining upgrade, which removed a design constraint that had governed console games since the compact disc. The controller also demonstrated that touch remained an underused channel, decades after rumble motors first appeared.

What it changed

Supply normalized during 2022, after which the console sold strongly for years. A slimmer revision and a more powerful mid-generation model followed, and a detachable-drive design made the disc drive optional. Haptic feedback of the kind introduced here has spread to other controllers, while fast storage became an assumed baseline that computer games also began to require.
