The PlayStation 4 wins developers with familiar architecture
Sony abandoned exotic processors for ordinary computer components, priced the console a hundred dollars below its rival and stated plainly that used discs and offline play would work. The generation was effectively decided early.

What happened
The previous console had been built around the unusual Cell processor, which was powerful in the right hands and painful to program for. Its successor used an x86 processor and a graphics chip of the sort found in personal computers, deliberately, so that studios could bring existing tools, engines and knowledge straight across. Lead architect Mark Cerny spent unusual amounts of public time explaining that decision to developers. Solid-state memory, a redesigned controller with a touchpad and share button, and streaming features for broadcasting play were layered on top of that conventional foundation.
Presentation mattered as much as engineering. Weeks before launch, the competing platform had announced policies on internet check-ins and restrictions around pre-owned discs that many players read as a threat to ownership. Sony used a stage appearance to say that its discs could be lent, resold and played offline without ceremony, and the contrast produced one of the most effective marketing moments in console history. Combined with the lower price and a strong flow of third-party releases, the console built a commanding lead in its first year and never surrendered it.
The world at the time
Digital distribution was well established on computers but still secondary on consoles, and publishers were openly hostile to the used game trade. Broadband was widespread in wealthy markets yet far from universal, making always-online requirements genuinely exclusionary. Development budgets were rising, so any platform that reduced porting work had a strong argument to make to studios.
Historical significance
Consoles became, in effect, standardized computers in fixed configurations, which lowered development costs and made multi-platform releases routine. The launch also demonstrated that clarity about what buyers are permitted to do with what they purchase can outweigh technical specifications entirely.
What it changed
The x86 approach carried into the following generation and eventually into portable computers running Windows game libraries. The used game controversy faded as digital sales grew until buying discs became the minority habit, arriving at much the same destination by consent rather than mandate. Mid-generation upgraded models later normalized hardware revisions within a single console cycle.
