What happened

The design was straightforward and the effect was not. Creatures appeared at locations drawn from a map database, gathering points and item stops were attached to landmarks, churches, murals and monuments, and progress required physically travelling to them. The camera view that placed a creature over the real world was the feature everyone mentioned, though the walking mattered more. Servers buckled under demand almost immediately, and the rollout to additional countries had to be slowed while capacity was added, which only intensified the impression that something unusual was happening.

Public space filled up in ways no software had produced before. Parks stayed busy after dark, strangers compared screens, businesses near popular locations saw sudden trade, and museums and municipal authorities scrambled to respond to visitors arriving for reasons unrelated to the exhibits. There were genuine problems too, including trespassing, traffic incidents involving distracted players, and complaints about locations placed at sensitive sites. Coverage ran on general news programs rather than technology segments, and the audience reached far outside anyone's definition of a gaming market.

The world at the time

Smartphones with satellite positioning and decent cameras were in most pockets in wealthy countries, and app stores had been operating for eight years. The developer had already tested the concept with an earlier location game built on a mapping background. Augmented reality was a familiar phrase in technology circles with almost nothing to show for it in consumer products.

Historical significance

Location-based play worked at enormous scale, using ordinary phone sensors and a map rather than special hardware. The release also proved that a game could reorganize the use of physical public space, which raised questions about mapping, permission and consent that cities are still working through.

What it changed

Attention faded from its extraordinary peak, but the game endured for years with a large, committed player base, seasonal events and organized local meetups. Its walking and gathering mechanics were widely imitated with limited success, which suggests the underlying draw was the franchise as much as the format. Public events built around it continue to draw substantial crowds to host cities.
