A small team at Sanders Associates worked through a series of television game prototypes, ending with a box covered in brown vinyl that played chase games, a ball-and-paddle game and a target game with a converted toy rifle.

What happened
Progress was incremental and physical. The earliest units did little more than move a spot around a screen; later ones added a second controllable spot, then a machine-controlled one, then color overlays and sound. Bill Harrison built the circuits and Bill Rusch contributed design ideas, including the third spot that made a ball-and-paddle game possible. The final prototype was covered in brown adhesive vinyl, which is how it got its name. It used discrete transistors and diodes, no processor of any kind, and fed a signal into the antenna terminals of a normal set.
Sanders had no intention of making consumer products, so the work was shown to companies that might. Cable operators and television manufacturers were approached, some negotiations went a long way before collapsing, and in 1971 Magnavox took a license. The shooting game came with a rifle modified to read light from the screen, and the console version kept it as an accessory. The original box survives in a national museum collection, which is more than can be said for most hardware of that era.
Priority claims around all of this need care. The Brown Box was the first system built to bring games to a home television, and its patents were repeatedly upheld in litigation, which is a firmer kind of confirmation than most historical firsts ever get. It was not the first game played on a screen, nor the first that anyone found fun, and Baer's team was working from a commercial insight rather than a technical breakthrough. Both statements are true at once.
The world at the time
Integrated circuits were expensive in 1967 and microprocessors did not exist, so a consumer device had to be built from individual components and kept simple. Television receivers were standardized enough that an outside box could feed them a picture. Nothing comparable was on sale, and the companies with capacity to build such a thing had no reason to think anyone wanted one.
Historical significance
This is the direct ancestor of every home console. It proved that acceptable interactive graphics could be produced by cheap analog circuits with no computer involved, which is why a console could be priced for a household in 1972, and its patents became the legal foundation of the early industry.
What it changed
Magnavox shipped a product based on the prototype in 1972, and the patents Sanders held produced years of licensing revenue and litigation, including the case that pushed Atari into taking a license after Pong. Museums and collectors treat the box as a founding object. Its overlay approach, colored plastic taped to the screen, disappeared as soon as chips could draw more than dots.
